The French group Peugeot PSA has just formalized its return to Kenya through the signing of an agreement with Urysia to begin the assembly work of vehicles by June 2017. A ceremony that took place under the eyes of the French Minister of Economy and Finance Michel Sapin and Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday.
The factory, which will be modest in size, will first assemble the Peugeot 508 and not forget the brand new SUV Peugeot 3008. The company Peugeot PSA and Urysia has imported the Peugeot brand since 2010 in the country. This time, they aim « an annual volume of more than 1,000 units to cover the needs of the Kenyan market » according to a press release of this society.
Referring to the assembly of Peugeot vehicles in Kenya between 1974 and 2002, Uhuru Kenyatta welcomed the return of the car manufacturer to his country. « Peugeot vehicles have always been tough, durable and reliable, and we are proud of their return home, » he said.
It should be noted that this establishment in Kenya, according to the leaders of the group, is part of a strategy whose purpose is to sell one million vehicles by 2025 in Africa and the Middle East. Other countries like Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and Iran are the next targets of the French group. The carmaker recently launched vehicle assembly plants in Ethiopia and Nigeria.
